Pastoralism for Safeguarding Ecosystems.
A Journey to Discover a Forgotten Treasure

Pastoralism is a form of livestock farming based on respect for nature. It protects the land by promoting biodiversity and preventing hydrogeological degradation. Historically, grazing activities have helped reduce poverty and ensure food security in many contexts. In recent decades, however, inland areas such as the Cilento have seen pastoralism decline because of economic, social and cultural challenges. Organisations active in the sector have recently stepped in to raise awareness of the issue, for example by adopting the Piaggine Charter on mountain pastoralism in Mediterranean countries. The document will be presented for the first time during the talk, with the aim of addressing the topic in areas so closely tied to it. Experts and key figures from the sector will tell us about the policies and practices that can encourage the resilience of pastoral communities: Sabatino Troisi, Angelo Lo Conte, Daniela Cennamo, Mario di Bartolomeo and Carmine Farnetano. Guided by the narration of Giuseppe Rivello, the discussion will look at the future prospects for this practice and the socio-economic and environmental consequences that its gradual disappearance may have on the territory.

Speakers:
Angelo Lo Conte – President, Slow Food Campania
Daniela Cennamo – Board Member, Slow Food Campania
Sabatino Troisi – Veterinary Services Director, Istituto di Gestione della Fauna (IGF)
Mario Di Bartolomeo – Azienda Agricola Le Starze
Carmine Farnetano – GAL Casacastra

Caring for the Land and Protecting Resources
Water in the Cilento: Past, Present and Future

A journey that begins with the first hydroelectric plants of the 1950s, moves through today’s water crises and arrives at a system of actions to preserve water as a resource. Together with the Iren Group, we will discover how hydroelectric energy is produced in balance with nature, safeguarding the ecological integrity of river ecosystems, protecting local natural, cultural and tourist assets, and drawing on targeted environmental education initiatives. Consac Gestioni Idriche will illustrate the complex dynamics of drinking water distribution, from waste prevention, awareness-raising and remediation plans to the digitalisation and smart monitoring of infrastructure. In this context, ongoing dialogue with local authorities is essential: by sharing objectives and adopting agreements, they take on a leading role in ensuring that future generations inherit well-cared-for land and protected resources in the Cilento.

Speakers:
Gennaro Maione – Consac Gestioni Idriche
Nicola Brizzo – Iren Energia
Nicola Tancredi – Mayor of Tortorella
Giampiero Nuzzo – Mayor of Caselle in Pittari

BLOC Project for the Ecological Transition of the Cultural System

The strategic goals of the TOCC incentive scheme (Ecological Transition for Cultural and Creative Organisations), promoted by the Ministry of Culture and aimed at businesses, associations and third-sector bodies working in the cultural and creative sector, are to foster social innovation through eco-design and the circular economy, and to guide the public towards more responsible behaviour towards the environment and the climate. BLOC took up the challenge and won funding for a project that includes a creative reuse workshop, awareness-raising activities, the recovery of waste materials from past editions of the festival and experiments in creating new set-design objects. To do this, we brought on board the team at ReMade Community Lab, a Naples-based lab that experiments with spreading ecological thinking and digital culture, the upcycling tailoring workshop CuCilento and the eco-entrepreneurs Growing Greener. The story of this journey, from design to practical implementation, will be presented during the talk, starting from the community goals achieved and the results obtained.

Speakers:
Susanna Parlato, Iole Sarno, Guilherme Nicolau Adad – ReMade Community Lab
Francesca Tortorelli, Eliza Cox – Growing Greener
Sarah Khoudja – CuCilento
Giuliana Tarallo – Illustrator
